Blue Jays Admit Teams Ask For Rios

Speculation has been rampant that the Blue Jays will look to deal Alex Rios in order to acquire pitching now that Vernon Wells has signed a long-term deal.

"There's a lot of interest in Rios," J.P. Ricciardi admitted. "We also have several of our young pitchers that get asked about."

He also went against the prevailing wisdom that signing another starter is a necessity to next season's success.

"I don't think it's a necessity but it's something we want to do," he said.

Owner: Blue Jays Were In Danger Of Leaving Six Years Ago

After the Blue Jays announced Vernon Wells' $126 million, seven-year contract Monday, owner Ted Rogers said the team was in danger of leaving Canada before he bought the franchise six years ago.

"There were Americans looking at buying it and moving the team to the United States. We thought at Rogers that that would be a terrible thing for our community," the owner said.

Wells, Blue Jays Agree To Sixth-Largest Deal In Baseball History

Wells and Blue Jays agree to $126 million, 7-year extension By ROB GILLIES, Associated Press Writer December 15, 2006

TORONTO (AP) -- All-Star center fielder Vernon Wells and the Toronto Blue Jays agreed Friday night to a $126 million, seven-year contract extension through 2014, the sixth-largest deal in baseball history.

"How can you not be happy?" Wells said during a telephone interview with The Associated Press several hours before terms of the deal were finalized. "Like I said, my family comes first. Obviously this gives me an opportunity to set my family up for a couple of generations. That's the biggest part of this thing. And this gives me a chance to do something special in Toronto that hasn't been done in a while."
