Jays Trade McDonald To Detroit

The Blue Jays traded infielder John McDonald to the Detroit Tigers on Friday in exchange for a player to be named later.

McDonald hit .290 with 12 RBI in 37 games. The backup infielder started 27 games this season, 25 at shortstop and two at second base.

Acquired by Toronto from Cleveland last December, McDonald hit a career .239 in 322 games with four home runs and 45 RBIs while playing for the Blue Jays and Indians.

The Blue Jays needed to make room for rookie infielder Aaron Hill, who is hitting .326 as Corey Koskie's replacement at third. Koskie is recovering from a broken right thumb and ligament tear, and is expected to return to the Blue Jays soon.

Halladay Out At Least A Month With Broken Bone In Leg

Blue Jays pitcher Roy Halladay will miss at least a month because of a broken bone in his left leg, spoiling his shot to start next week's All-Star Game.

Halladay sustained a non-displaced fracture in his lower left leg when he was struck by Kevin Mench's line drive in the third inning of the Blue Jays' 7-6 loss at Texas on Friday night. The Blue Jays put their ace on the 15-day disabled list Saturday and expect him to be out 4-6 weeks. Halladay, the 2003 AL Cy Young winner, was on the disabled list twice last season because of right shoulder problems.

"Missing the time ... that's the most disappointing for me," Halladay said Saturday. "I just wanted to have a full season and be here with us for the full season."

Leaning on crutches with a boot cast extended to just below his left knee, Halladay said Saturday that he doesn't want to sit out long. He'll return to Toronto during the All-Star break to begin rehabilitation instead of going to Detroit.

"Hopefully after a week, I can start putting pressure on it, walking on it," he said. "After that, from what I hear, it's whatever I can tolerate. Hopefully, I can start playing catch and things in a week. If I can keep that there, it shouldn't be a huge problem. I don't want to miss that much time in throwing and have to have a mini spring training."

Halladay Leaves Game After Being Hit In Shin By Line Drive

Toronto Blue Jays All-Star pitcher Roy Halladay left Friday night's game against the Texas Rangers in the third inning when he was struck in the left shin by a line drive hit by Kevin Mench.

Halladay went down for the count after getting hit by a Kevin Mench line drive.

Halladay was taken to Medical Center of Arlington for precautionary X-rays on a left leg bruise. Halladay underwent tests after Texas' 7-6 victory and club spokesman Ryan Mittleman said the pitcher's status will not be known until Saturday.

"We don't want to rush him back," manager John Gibbons said. "We want to make sure he's good and ready. We'll see what the reports say, and we'll go from there."

Halladay. 12-4 with a league-leading 2.41 ERA, picked up the ball and threw out Mench at first base from a seated position, then rolled to his side grimacing in pain.

Teammates, Gibbons and trainer George Poulis rushed to Halladay, who was on the ground for about two minutes. Halladay got to his feet and walked slowly to the dugout. The Blue Jays had a 6-3 lead.

"It sounded pretty bad," catcher Gregg Zaun said. "When he walked off the field, I was relieved. But we'll find out what the news is."
