Tampa Bay Rays Wiretap

Maddon Wouldn't Bet On Rays Making Trade

There is a possibility that things could change, but Joe Maddon doesn't expect the Rays to swing a deal by Tuesday's trade deadline.

"My feeling normally is this, and I've been right almost all the time, is that we're not going to do anything," the manager said.

"We talk a lot and it always takes two to dance, and at the end of the day it's difficult to match up all the time. So I would bet that nothing really happens."

Tampa Bay right-hander James Shields has been mentioned often in trade rumors this month.

Maddon Doesn't Believe Shields Will Be Dealt

James Shields has been linked to several teams as the trade deadline approaches, but Rays manager Joe Maddon doesn't believe he'll be dealt.

"You would think that might turn more of the focus on our guy, there's no question. I can't deny that," Maddon said.

"But at the end of the day, I still believe Shieldsy is going to be a Ray after the trade deadline is over.

"All this conjecture does occur, and there's reasons why they're pointing at James. But I still believe in my heart of hearts that it's not going to happen, and it's going to move on and we're going to be normal and he's going to pitch like he can over the last two months of the season."

Rays Holding Onto Shields, Waiting For Better Offers

The Rangers, Dodgers and Angels are the main suitors for Rays right-hander James Shields, according to sources.

All three teams have made offers for Shields, but Tampa Bay is waiting for someone to better the current packages.

The Angels and Rays have discussed center fielder Peter Bourjos, but Tampa Bay has made it clear Bourjos alone isn't enough.

At Least Five Teams Have Asked About Shields

It remains to be seen if the Rays would actually trade him, but at least five teams have inquired about right-hander James Shields.

The Rangers, Angels, Dodgers, Cardinals and Indians have shown interest in Shields, who has reasonable team options for $9 million next year and $12 million in 2014.

Rays Cut Hideki Matsui

The Rays have designated Hideki Matsui for assignment.

Tampa Bay made the move to make room for Ryan Roberts, who was acquired in a deal with the Diamondbacks.

The Rays have 10 days to trade Matsui, release him or place him on waivers.

Matsui is hitting .147 with two homers and seven RBIs in 95 at-bats.
