Rays Sign Maddon To Three-Year Extension

The Rays have signed manager Joe Maddon to a three-year contract extension, according to a baseball source.

Maddon took over the team prior to the 2006 season and endured two losing campaigns before finding unparalleled success. Over the past four seasons, the team has averaged 90-plus wins after averaging 90-plus losses the four previous seasons.

He has twice won the Baseball Writers Association of America American League Manager of the Year Award, for guiding his team to the playoffs in 2008 and 2011.

Leaner Longoria Hopes To Play 162 Games

Evan Longoria dropped 10 to 15 pounds this offseason as he looks to avoid any nagging injuries.

He has been plagued by muscle injuries in the past two seasons.

Instead of lifting weights, Longoria focused on plyometrics (muscle stretching and explosiveness) and movement prep, "more strengthening the smaller muscles in my body and not just doing biceps and bench and all the heavy stuff," he said.

"It's just as intense of a workout. It's just a different workout than you're used to, a lot of core strengthening."
