Rays Would Be Big Beneficiary Of Realignment

The Rays could have the players union as a powerful ally in their efforts to be more consistently competitive, primarily by facing fewer games against the Red Sox and Yankees.

New union boss Michael Weiner said after meeting with Rays players that the union would be open to some limited forms of realignment.

A massive change to the traditional MLB structure might be a bit much, Weiner said, "but a realignment that I think retains the identity of the leagues but tries to address around the edges the competitive balance thing is something I think the players would have to consider."

The Rays currently play 22.2 percent of their games (36 of 162) against the Red Sox and Yankees.

Injury To Howell Forces 'Disappointed' Sonnanstine To Pen

Rookie Wade Davis will be Tampa Bay's fifth starter, moving Andy Sonnanstine into the bullpen because of the injury to J.P. Howell.

"A little disappointed," he said. "It's a tough one to swallow."

"The competition would have continued had J.P. not been injured," manager Joe Maddon said.

Navarro Suffers Nerve Contusion In Leg

Rays catcher Dioner Navarro suffered a nerve contusion in his left leg during a collision at home plate on Saturday.

Navarro was taken in an ambulance to a local clinic for X-rays, which came back negative.

He remained on the field for about eight minutes and had to be driven off on a cart.

Tampa Bay still hopes he'll be ready for Opening Day.
