Tampa Bay Rays Wiretap

McGee May Be Headed To Rays' Bullpen

Rays prospect Jake McGee has recovered from Tommy John surgery and could be headed to the team's bullpen.

He had the elbow reconstruction surgery in July 2008.

McGee is throwing 95 mph and says that his changeup is better than ever. He is being told that Tampa Bay sees him as a fit in the bullpen.

"I'd like that role a lot, actually," he told the St. Petersburg Times. "Just the adrenaline going out and knowing I have only one inning for three outs. Pitch for pitch, I can give it all I got."

Rays Want Insurance Behind Navarro

The Rays will look to ensure they have insurance on their roster behind catcher Dioner Navarro.

Navarro hit .218 in a disappointing 2009 season that followed-up his All-Star campaign in 2008. He is also coming off October elbow surgery on his non-throwing arm.

Tampa Bay could look to bring veteran Gregg Zaun back to help in the event Navarro struggles.

Rays Still Value Upton Tremendously

Despite a down year, the Rays still greatly value center fielder B.J. Upton.

ESPN's Buster Olney reported on Saturday that the Rangers inquired with the Rays about Upton's services.

However, Tampa Bay would have to be overwhelmed by a deal in order to trade Upton.

Rays Exercise $10M Option On Crawford

The Rays have exercised their $10 million option on outfielder Carl Crawford.

Crawford is the longest-tenured player in Tampa Bay history.

If the Rays had declined the option, he would have been owed a $1.25 million buyout.

Rays Trade Iwamura To Pittsburgh

The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced they have acquired infielder Akinori Iwamura from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for right-handed pitcher Jesse Chavez. The announcement was made by Pirates Senior Vice President, General Manager Neal Huntington.

The 30-year-old Iwamura, who was a nine-year veteran of the Japanese Central League while playing with Yakult from 1998 to 2006, spent the last three seasons playing with Tampa Bay. He was converted from a third baseman to a second baseman following the 2007 campaign and went on to make 152 appearances at second base for the American League champion Rays in 2008.
