The Mariners aren't looking to add talent at the trade deadline in an effort to make a playoff push, but they do want to "buy" hitters.
Seattle has the worst offense in the American League, averaging 3.9 runs per game through Sunday.
The Mariners would like to add a hitter that can help them over the next two or three seasons.
They are focused on Minnesota's Josh Willingham (signed through 2014) and Allen Craig (under control through 2016) of St. Louis.

It remains to be seen if the Rays would actually trade him, but at least five teams have inquired about right-hander James Shields.
The Rangers, Angels, Dodgers, Cardinals and Indians have shown interest in Shields, who has reasonable team options for $9 million next year and $12 million in 2014.

The Cardinals will be buyers at the trade deadline despite a slow start to the second half of the season, according to general manager John Mozeliak.
The defending World Series champions came into Saturday night's game against the Cubs five games back in the NL Central at 48-45.
Mozeliak said there is payroll flexibility for the short and long-term, but indicates the team most likely will seek bullpen upgrades.

The Cardinals tied a record with seven doubles in an inning against the Cubs on Saturday.
St. Louis accomplished the feat in the seventh inning of their 12-0 victory.
They tied the franchise record for runs in an inning set Sept. 16, 1926, against the Phillies, in the third inning of the opener of a doubleheader in Philadelphia.
"We've had some against us that felt like 12," manager Mike Matheny said. "You look at this offense and they can come in bundles.
