The Cardinals have landed pitcher Jake Westbrook in a three-team trade that will also send outfielder Ryan Ludwick to the Padres.
"I'm excited to go to a club that's contending for a playoff spot and pitch in some meaningful ballgames," Westbrook said. "That's why you play the game, to get a chance to play in the playoffs and I look forward to doing that."
St. Louis gets Westbrook from Cleveland, who received Double-A pitcher Corey Kluber from San Diego.
The Cardinals also acquired left-hander Nick Greenwood from San Diego.

A report surfaced Wednesday that the Cardinals were interested in Miguel Tejada, and while the Cardinals contacted the Orioles about the veteran, a source said there was "no traction" for a deal.
The Cardinals have had interest in Tejada before and see him as a player that can play multiple spots in the infield.

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa refused to comment Friday on speculation that he may be a candidate to replace Lou Piniella, who is retiring as manager of the Cubs at the end of the season.
"[I just] ignore it," La Russa said. "Ignore it."
La Russa did open up slightly when asked about the pressures associated with managing the Cubs.
"I wouldn't even answer that question because I don't believe what you're asking is true," La Russa said. "There's nothing about Chicago that's harder than St. Louis.
"You got a job in the big leagues, there are 30 of them. They're all demanding and there isn't one that's tougher than the other."
