Pujols Extension Talks Paused Until Winter

If Albert Pujols signs an extension with the Cardinals before becoming a free agent, it will happen during the coming winter at the earliest.

Both the Cardinals and Pujols' camp see the offseason as their next window.

Pujols Undergoes MRI, Gets Anti-Inflammatory Shot

Albert Pujols underwent an MRI exam and received an anti-inflammatory shot on Monday after the slugger was scratched from the Cardinals' home game against the Red Sox due to a recurrence of tightness in his lower back. Pujols missed a week earlier in the spring with the same condition.

General manager John Mozeliak explained that Pujols received the MRI in order to determine where exactly to give Pujols the shot. The 2009 National League MVP is considered "day-to-day," though anti-inflammatory shots often sideline a player for approximately three days. The Cardinals are off on Tuesday.

"He received an MRI today, and then an injection to put him over the hump or make him feel better," Mozeliak said. "He's day-to-day. With the off-day tomorrow, we'll see how he feels on Wednesday."

Lee Believes Cardinals Are Better Than Cubs On Paper

If the Cubs don't win now, the team may be a very different look in 2011.

"I don't think you ever think about anything like that," impending free agent Derrek Lee said. "You only worry about winning games. All the other stuff takes care of itself. I don't think that's ever a concern."

The Cubs have some of their 2008 swagger back this spring.

"When guys like Geo (Soto) and Zambrano come in after losing weight, that shows dedication," Lee said. "I would think there's probably a little more focus. I think last year we probably took things for granted a little bit, coming off a great 2008, but this year we realize we're not the favorites.

"We're not the best team on paper. I think the Cardinals are, so we've got our work cut out for us."
