Ankiel On Trade Rumors: They Were Stimulating

Cardinals pitcher-turned-outfielder Rick Ankiel wasn't overly bothered by trade rumors involving his name this past winter.

"It was stimulating for me," Ankiel said. "It was kind of nice to know another team wants you. ... That time of the offseason, you're in no man's land, you're working out and then you hear all these exciting rumors, guys signing and you never know what is going to happen. That's not me saying I would ever want to leave the Cardinals, but it was stimulating, mentally stimulating.

"That was all new to me."

Chris Carpenter Looks Strong Again

Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter looked impressive once again on Monday during the team's 6-3 win over the Nationals.

"I thought he was good again," manager Tony La Russa said. "He had everything. Everything is working."

Carpenter has missed a majority of the last two seasons with arm trouble. He finished Monday's game with six strikeouts and threw strikes on 52 of 76 pitches.

"He was throwing good enough that they weren't putting the ball in play early in the count and he has a finishing pitch," pitching coach Dave Duncan said. "He doesn't try to get swings and misses but if he gets an 0-2, 1-2 count, he's going to try to put the guy away, and he's got pitches to do it with."

Fuentes Would Have Cost Cards Ludwick Or Ankiel?

With the Cardinals trying to keep an eye on their payroll, they likely would have had to cut ties with one of their outfielders in order to sign closer Brian Fuentes.

Fuentes signed with the Angels, saving the team from having to dump either Ryan Ludwick or Rick Ankiel in order to reduce payroll.
