Mozeliak: Manny Won't Be A Cardinal

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak says that the team will not pursue free-agent slugger Manny Ramirez.

"The answer is no," Mozeliak told the Los Angeles Times.

Speculation began on Thursday when Albert Pujols said in a news conference in the Dominican Republic that he'd like St. Louis to sign Ramirez.

"I speak with Manny every three days and he tells me, 'Man, no one wants to sign me,' " Pujols said. "I'm not an agent or general manager, but I can't understand how Manny has not signed."

Manny: No One Wants To Sign Me

Albert Pujols is encouraging the St. Louis Cardinals to sign Manny Ramirez.

The Cardinals slugger, who won his second NL MVP award in November, acknowledged the team might not have enough money to land the free-agent outfielder.

"I speak with Manny every three days and he tells me, 'Man, no one wants to sign me,' Pujols said Thursday during a news conference. "I'm not an agent or general manager, but I can't understand how Manny has not signed."

Pujols passed along Ramirez's telephone number to St. Louis manager Tony La Russa.

"Maybe St. Louis doesn't have the money to sign him, but he could give them a discount because St. Louis is a great city that supports its players,'' Pujols said.

Texas, Cardinals And Dodgers Showing Most Interest In Benson

The Dodgers, Rangers, and Cardinals, sources say, are showing the most consistent interest in Benson, according to a major-league source. Benson, 34, underwent rotator-cuff surgery in March 2007 and last pitched in the majors in 2006.

An executive from a club with interest in Benson said he looks only "so-so," in his throwing sessions. "Better than expected," the exec said, "but not great."

Joe Buck Blasts Cardinals' Offseason

FOX broadcaster Joe Buck, who appeared on Tim McKernan's "The Morning After" radio show recently, criticized the way the Cardinals have approached their offseason.

"I don't think they've done near enough," Buck said. "They better get to work. They've got a lot of holes to fill."

Buck would have liked to see St. Louis go after closer Brian Fuentes.

"Everybody in the world ? even my daughters ? knew they had to go out and get a closer." Buck concluded: "My season ticket check evidently cashed, because it came out of my bank account. So, I'm assuming they have people's money. And it's time they go spend some of it."

McGwire's Brother Alleges Steroid And HGH Abuse

A new book proposal, submitted by the admittedly estranged brother of Mark McGwire, claims the former single season home run leader used both steroids and human growth hormone during his career.

In the proposal, first reported Wednesday on Deadspin.com, Jay McGwire alleges that Mark used Deca-Durabolin and that he introduced Mark to performance-enhancing drugs in 1994.

According to the report, Jay McGwire writes in his proposal that his brother "began to use, but in low dosages so he wouldn't lift his way out of baseball. Deca-Durabolin helped with his joint problems and recovery, while growth hormone helped his strength, making him leaner in the process. I became the first person to inject him, like most first-timers he couldn't plunge in the needle himself. Later a girlfriend injected him."

The McGwire brothers reportedly haven't spoken to each other for years.

The book, "The McGwire Family Secret: The Truth about Steroids, a Slugger and Ultimate Redemption," is reportedly being sent by Jay McGwire to several publishing houses in New York. Deadspin.com said that it has been turned down by "many" publishers.
