UNC's Ackley Could Be Second Pick

Many regard North Carolina shortstop Dustin Ackley as the best hitting prospect in the country.

The Nationals are expected to take Stephen Strasburg, which would leave Ackley for the Mariners, who have the second overall pick.

"Everyone is saying, 'It's Strasburg and everyone else,' " Baseball America's Jim Callis said. "It's Strasburg, and the clear No. 2 is Ackley."

Will Bedard Become A Hot Commodity?

The Mariners could be close to placing pitcher Erik Bedard on the trade market, despite their decent start to the season.

Bedard's value could rise based on the status of San Diego's Jake Peavy and other team's decision about their ace pitchers.

Bedard, who is reasonably priced at $7.75 million, could be a target for contending clubs like the Phillies, White Sox and Mets.

Mark Lowe Might Close Some Games For M's

Mark Lowe could close some games for the Mariners this week, a job he was hoping to secure during spring training.

Brandon Morrow has been removed from the closer's role, David Aardsma can't pitch everyday, and Lowe has looked good this season.

"They're throwing me a lot, and that's a great thing. It keeps you crisp and ready to go," Lowe said Saturday. "To have the arm strength I've got right now and feel like I did in '06, with the same confidence."
