M's Fire McLaren

John McLaren was fired Thursday as manager of the Mariners, who began the season with playoff aspirations and now have the worst record in the major leagues.

Bench Coach Jim Riggleman will run the Mariners for the rest of their lost season, beginning Friday night in Atlanta, as reported by the Associated Press.

M's Sexson And Vidro Could Be Released

Richie Sexson and Jose Vidro are top candidates to be released by the Mariners in the wake of the firing of General Manager Bill Bavasi, according to The Seattle Times.

Both players have struggled this season and are much more likely to be released than traded.

M's Send Balentien To Triple-A Tacoma, Recall Clement

The Mariners optioned outfielder Wladimir Balentien to Class AAA Tacoma after Monday?s loss to the Marlins, as reported by Yahoo Sports.

The Mariners recalled catcher Jeff Clement from Tacoma in a corresponding move.

Mariners Place Putz On 15-Day DL

The Mariners on Friday placed closer J.J. Putz on the 15-day disabled list with a hyperextended pitching elbow.

Putz already has missed 18 games this season with a rib cage injury and also has had knee and finger pain. He was removed from Wednesday?s win at Toronto in the ninth inning after shaking his arm following a pitch.
