Mariners Place Their Ace On DL

Seattle placed ace right-hander Felix Hernandez on the 15-day disabled list on Monday, shelving their hard-throwing 21-year-old until at least May 4.

Hernandez left his start Wednesday night against Minnesota after getting just one out. He allowed three runs, walked two, threw a wild pitch that scored a run, then waved trainers out to the mound to remove him from the game. Hernandez was diagnosed with a muscle strain inside his right elbow and forearm, and was kept from throwing for five days.

Colon To Make First Start Of Season

Eight-and-a-half months after undergoing right rotator cuff surgery, Bartolo Colon is ready to make his first start of the season for the Angels.

Colon will be activated before Saturday night's game against the Mariners.

The 2005 AL Cy Young Award winner, Colon made just 10 starts last season before undergoing surgery to repair a partial tear in his rotator cuff in early August.

Colon, who turns 34 years old in May, made three minor league rehabilitation starts and was especially dominant in his last one, throwing seven scoreless innings for Class AAA Salt Lake of the Pacific Coast League last Sunday.

Mariners' Hernandez Likely To Miss 2-3 Starts

Mariners ace Felix Hernandez will likely miss two to three starts with a muscle strain inside his right elbow and forearm. Mariners medical director Dr. Ed Khalfayan said Thursday that the 21-year-old right-hander will not throw for five days, then will play catch. An MRI revealed the strain.

"I think 10 to 20 days is a reasonable estimate, "Khalfayan said when asked when Hernandez might again pitch in a game. "That's as good a news as you can get from an elbow injury."
