Giants Openly Criticize Conditioning Of Lincecum, Sandoval

Bruce Bochy and the Giants have publicly talked about the need for Tim Lincecum and Pablo Sandoval to improve their conditioning.

"They are two young players with special gifts and talents," Bochy said. "But you still have to work at all parts of the game, and that includes conditioning. Sometimes you learn in your second or third season how important that is. Players realize how hard they have to work to continue the level of performance they want to play at."

The Giants worked with Sandoval last winter to improve his weight.

Lincecum's issues are more complicated and the most likely remedy is an improved cardiovascular capability.

Slumping Cardinals, Umpires Getting To La Russa

Madison Bumgarner pitched into the eighth inning and the Giants got home runs from Pablo Sandoval and Aubrey Huff, sending the Cardinals to their season-worst fifth straight loss with a 6-3 victory on Friday night.

The slump is getting to Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, who complained about home plate umpire Gary Cederstrom?s calls in the ninth inning while Brian Wilson was finishing for his 35th save in 38 chances.

?You can go ahead and fine me, I don?t care,? La Russa said. ?There were several strikes, a guy as good as Brian Wilson, he doesn?t need. Who knows how that inning would have been??

Giants Claim Cody Ross From Marlins

A National League team has claimed Marlins outfielder Cody Ross on waivers and sources say the Giants have been identified as the club.

Nothing could be confirmed due to the confidentiality of the waiver process.

Sources added that the Braves and Phillies, two teams linked to Ross, did not receive the claim.

If no deal is completed by Monday, the Marlins can dump Ross on the claiming team or pull him back from waivers.

Ross is owed slightly more than $1 million for the rest of the season.

Giants Trying To Block Third Baseman From Reaching Cards, Braves

The Giants may be trying to keep a third baseman from reaching the Cardinals and Braves through the waiver process, according to ESPN's Buster Olney.

"Heard this: There is a perception among some GMs that the Giants are trying to prevent third basemen from reaching the Cardinals or ... Braves in the waiver process -- which makes sense, because SF is competing with those teams for the playoffs," Olney wrote on his Twitter page.

San Francisco holds a .5 game lead on St. Louis for the National League Wild Card. Atlanta has a 2.5 game lead over San Francisco, but they currently lead the NL East.
