Bonds Hits 742nd Career Home Run, But Hairston Gives D-Backs Win

Arizona manager Bob Melvin said he wanted to "crawl into a hole" when he pitched to Barry Bonds with first base open and Bonds hit a two-run homer, the 742nd of his career.

Scott Hairston bailed his manager out. Hairston hit a three-run pinch-hit homer to lead the D-Backs to a 5-4 victory over the Giants on Saturday night.

Hairston hit reliever Vinnie Chulk's first pitch 418 feet into the left-field seats with two runners on to give the D-Backs a 5-4 lead in the seventh inning.

It was the 14th homer of Hairston career, leaving him just 728 shy of Bonds. Hairston homered for the first time since 2004.

Dodgers GM Thinks Cain May Break Ryan's No-Hitter Record

Matt Cain is a potential Cy Young candidate and has a big admirer from the Giants biggest rival.

"Matt Cain wants to be the best pitcher in the game, and he's doing what it takes to get there," says Dodgers GM Ned Colletti, who was an assistant GM in San Francisco when Cain first reached the big leagues. "I think he'll wind up pitching more no-hitters than almost anybody in the history of the game."
