GM: Bonds Needs To Take Paycut

The Giants will have about $35 million to spend to improve their club, according to Brian Sabean, meaning Barry Bonds will have to take a paycut to stay with the Giants.

``Barry aside, that type of chunk of money probably won't be dedicated to any one individual player because of our relative needs,'' Sabean said. ``We're going to have to spread the wealth or the monies available throughout the roster.''

That means the Giants probably won't be among the front-runners for the few premium free agents on the market, such as Alfonso Soriano.

``We'd be open-minded, but you have to see how it fits in the cash flow,'' Sabean said. ``If you're able to do creative deals or other things fall into place, you'll be more apt to be able to do such a (high-dollar) acquisition.''

Alou's Future With Giants Yet To Be Resolved

Felipe Alou plans to fly home to Florida and then to the Dominican Republic as soon as the season ends, even if his future with the San Francisco Giants has yet to be resolved.

The 71-year-old Alou's contract is up soon, and it is unclear whether he wants to return for a fifth season as manager or whether the Giants want him back. For team management, discussing Alou's situation was on the to-do list for the final week before the sides parted ways for the winter.

"I know my future is good," Alou said this week.

Agent: Bonds Will Play In 2007

While Barry Bonds has not made an overt declaration on whether or not he'll play in 2007, his agent cleared the air on Tuesday.

"Barry's going to play in 2007," Jeff Borris of Beverly Hills Sports Council said. "I've had many discussions with Barry and he's going to play. My intentions are to see to it he's in a big-league uniform next season. Those are my marching orders."

The Tigers, Dodgers, Angels, Yankees and Mariners are believed to be of interest to Bonds.

"I have every reason to believe the Giants will contact me as soon as the season ends," Borris said.
