According to an MLB executive, the Mets and Giants discussed a trade involving Jason Schmidt, but now that deal looks like it is permanently shelved.
When Roy Oswalt's name surfaced in the Miguel Tejada talks, Omar Minaya duly took notice. Like with Dontrelle Willis, Minaya would make Lastings Milledge available in a deal for an ace that is signed beyond 2006.

According to sources that have been in contact with Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald, Jason Schmidt has been made available by Brian Sabean and the Giants.
The additions of Shea Hillenbrand and Mike Stanton have made the Giants appear to be buyers, but with a major rebuilding process set to begin in San Francisco this winter, the club may be looking to start early. The club has also lost seven consecutive games after briefly being in first place.
