San Francisco Giants Wiretap

Giants Trade Cruz And Christiansen

The Giants made two trades on Tuesday, as Deivi Cruz and Jason Christiansen were dealt.

Cruz, 32, was San Francisco's starting shortstop for most of last season, but was relegated to bench duty with the acquisition of Omar Vizquel this year. He was traded for right-handed pitcher Benjamin Cox, 23, from Washington's Class A Savannah.

Christiansen, 35, was designated for assignment last Friday after appearing in 56 games from the bullpen this year, logging a 6-1 mark and 5.36 ERA. He was also an outspoken critic of manager Felipe Alou's use of the relievers.

Acquired from Anaheim were left-handed pitcher Dusty Bergman, 27, who pitched for Triple-A Salt Lake this season and has played seven years in the Minor Leagues. He pitched two innings in one contest for the Angels last year.

Also traded from Anaheim was right-hander Ronnie Ray, 21, who was a combined 7-6 with a 4.40 ERA for Class A teams Rancho Cucamonga and Cedar Rapids this year. In nine starts, he was 4-2 with a 3.51 ERA.

Alou said it was a good move for Cruz, who will likely see regular action at Washington.

Bonds Taking Cuts At UCLA

Barry Bonds has been taking batting practice at UCLA's baseball facility for the last two days, ESPN.com's Jayson Stark learned Tuesday night.

According to Marc Dellins, an associate athletic director for sports information at UCLA, Bonds' representatives contacted the school recently and asked if he could hit in the batting cage "for a couple of days."

The school gave him permission. And Bonds worked out Monday and Tuesday with his own people, Dellins said. No UCLA players or coaches participated, Dellins said.

Bonds' agent, Jeff Borris, confirmed late Tuesday that it was his office that made contact with UCLA and requested permission for Bonds to use the facilities.

"They said they'd be more than happy to accommodate him," Borris said, "and that he should just call ahead to let them know them know when he was coming"

Giants general manager Brian Sabean spoke Tuesday to renowned Angels orthopedist Dr. Lewis Yocum, who has been working with Bonds in Los Angeles along with physical therapist Clive Brewster.

"Him taking swings in a college batting cage is a long way from doing baseball work with us," Sabean told ESPN.com. "It's just another step in his rehab. To what extent this is of any significance -- until I'm told otherwise -- it's just part of the exercise regimen he's going through. Once he's accelerated to the point where the doctors are ready to turn him over to us, then he can do more meaningful and substantial baseball activities. But for now, this is just another step."

Phillies Land Michael Tucker

The San Francisco Giants traded outfielder Michael Tucker to the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday for minor league right-hander Kelvin Pichardo.

Tucker, whose playing time has been limited this season after starting in right field for most of 2004, joins a Phillies team in the heart of the playoff chase.

"Right now I don't think a whole lot takes me by surprise," said Tucker, who found out about the deal within minutes of the Giants' 2-1 win over the New York Mets. "It's nice always to be playing for something.

"It's one of those things that comes up and you have no control over it. You do the best you can. They're a good team and it's one of those things you hope they can keep winning."

San Francisco (56-72) wants to evaluate its young players in the final month of the season. Manager Felipe Alou plans to consistently use Todd Linden and Jason Ellison, who will be recalled from Triple-A Fresno on Monday to take Tucker's roster spot.

Matt Cain To Make Debut For Giants On Monday

Matt Cain has been called up to start Monday night's game against Colorado.

He is the Giants top prospect.

"I had a smoothie," said Cain, whose three-year ride from high school through the minor leagues could not have been smoother than his beverage. On Friday, the Giants purchased Cain's contract from Triple-A Fresno and said he will replace starter Brett Tomko, who returns to the bullpen.

"I believe the organization is making a transition, making a move," manager Felipe Alou said. "The players are there, especially the young pitchers, and they are being given an opportunity."

General manager Brian Sabean said the Cain and Taschner promotions are "signaling an effort to try to win some games. The bottom line is to try to win and develop. The young kids are ready in our estimation. For that you're going to have to change the makeup of your roster."

Giants Designate Chrstiansen For Assignment

The Giants have designated left-handed reliever Jason Christiansen for assignment with the hopes of trading him.

He was 6-1 with a 5.36 ERA in 56 games this season. The Giants acquired him in a 2001 deadline deal, and he pitched well enough to earn a three-year, $6.8 million contract to be the left-handed setup man. But "Tommy John" surgery early in 2002 derailed his Giants career.

The club re-signed him for $1 million this season with a mutual option for 2006, but he had no plans to return as long as Alou was still manager. Christiansen publicly complained on the last road trip about how Alou used his relievers.

He had no harsh words Friday and even suggested the Giants were heading in the right direction, with his departure and those of Brower and Herges.

"Look at the guys who stepped into that situation," Christiansen said. "You've got (Jeremy) Accardo, Munter, Taschner. Jeez, these guys have electric arms. They're young, energetic, fresh faces. That's what they need around here, some young kids to go out there maybe a little bit more hungry. Maybe that's what they're looking for, something to spark this team a little bit."
