San Diego Padres Wiretap
The Padres will call up Casey Kelly to start against the Braves on Monday night.
The right-hander is San Diego's top-ranked prospect and one of the key parts from the 2010 trade that sent Adrian Gonzalez to Boston.
The Padres placed pitcher Jason Marquis on the 15-day DL and claimed right-hander Thad Weber off waivers from the Tigers.
Marquis has a fractured left wrist. He'll be replaced on the roster by Brad Boxberger, who was recalled from Triple-A Tucson.
The Padres have placed Edinson Volquez on trade waivers.
Volquez was San Diego's Opening Day starter.
MLB owners have approved the sale of the Padres to a group that includes Kevin and Brian O'Malley, the sons of former Dodgers owner Peter O'Malley.
Bud Selig announced the endorsement after the conclusion of the owners meetings in Denver on Thursday.
Under the deal, the group will buy the franchise from owner John Moores for around $800M.
The Padres have signed Mark Kotsay to a one-year contract that will keep him with the team through the 2013 season.
San Diego likes Kotsay's left-handed bat off the bench and his place in the clubhouse.
"I enjoy my role here," he said. "Being a part of this club going forward is exciting for me, to have this opportunity and be one of the leaders of the club inside the locker room and to be able to contribute on field still and have some success is something that I enjoy doing. I love the game of baseball, and couldn't be more happy to have this opportunity to do it at home in San Diego."
Kotsay is hitting .275 this season with one home run and nine RBIs in 102 at-bats.
