The Yankees have discussed Chase Headley with the Padres, according to a source.
New York claimed they would fill the vacancy created by Alex Rodriguez's injury at third base from within, but that stance may have changed.
"Names have not been exchanged," the source said, noting that talks between the Yankees and Padres are preliminary.
Headley could serve as a fill-in at third base while Rodriguez recovers from a broken hand and also a replacement for Nick Swisher in the outfield next season.
Swisher will be a free agent this winter.
