San Diego Padres Wiretap

Padres Getting Calls About Headley

The Padres have received calls about Chase Headley ahead of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.

The third baseman has an OPS of .789, which is good considering that he plays at Petco Park.

San Diego is willing to trade Headley, but they will reportedly ask for a "lot."

Padres Bullpen Coach Dies Of Cancer

Padres bullpen coach Darrel Akerfelds died Sunday of pancreatic cancer. He was 50.

Akerfelds had been bullpen coach for San Diego since June 2001.

"Ak was an invaluable member of the Padres coaching staff," manager Bud Black said.

"He was a loyal Padre to the end. Players and coaches were made better by Ak. He will be sorely missed."

A Denver native, Akerfelds played professional baseball for 12 seasons and appeared in 125 major league games. He was 9-10 with 5.08 ERA pitching for Oakland, Cleveland, Texas and Philadelphia.

Padres Could Build Around Quentin

Many expect the Padres to trade Carlos Quentin, but the team is in such a fluid position that no assumption is safe.

Quentin is a potential free agent, but San Diego still could take their chances and keep the outfielder, knowing that signing him would not be out of the question even if their payroll stayed in the $55 million range next season.
