Padres, Cantu Agree To One-Year Contract

The Padres have agreed to a one-year contract with corner infielder Jorge Cantu.

Cantu split the 2010 season between the Marlins and Rangers, hitting a combined .256 with 11 home runs and 56 RBIs.

He started 86 of his 123 games at third base.

Padres, Cantu Close To One-Year Deal

The Padres are close to signing corner infielder Jorge Cantu to a one-year contract, according to a source.

The agreement is pending a physical.

Cantu set a Major League record by starting the season with 10 consecutive games with at least one hit and one RBI with the Marlins in 2010.

His best season came in 2005, when he batted .286 and hit 28 homers while driving in 117 runs for Tampa Bay.

Astros End Talks With Cantu

The Astros have ended talks with free-agent Jorge Cantu, who is still being chased by the Braves and Padres.

The Indians are also a long-shot candidate to sign the first/third baseman.

Cantu, a Houston resident, hit .262 with 10 homers and 54 RBI in 97 games for the Marlins last season prior to being traded to the Rangers on July 29.

Padres Give Bell One-Year, $7.5M Deal

The Padres have avoided arbitration with closer Heath Bell by agreeing to a one-year, $7.5 million contract.

San Diego avoided arbitration with four other players as well.

Outfielder Ryan Ludwick will earn $6,775,000, right-handed reliever Mike Adams received a deal for $2,535,000, third baseman Chase Headley gets $2,325,000 and pitcher Tim Stauffer gets $1,075,000.

San Diego Closing In On Qualls

The Padres are closing in on signing free agent reliever Chad Qualls, according to a source.

Qualls began the 2010 season as Arizona's closer and struggled overall.
