Tomko Joins Padres

Brett Tomko rejoined the Padres on Friday six days after he was placed on unconditional waivers by the Royals, as reported by the Associated Press.

Tomko said he spoke with several teams and chose the Padres because he lives in suburban Poway.

?It came down to here and ?people will think I?m crazy? the Yankees,? Tomko said before the Padres played the Seattle Mariners. ?It definitely was enticing, but like I told them, it?s nice to be home. I mean, to be able to pitch at home is always a great thing.?

Yankees Notch Seventh Consecutive Victory

The New York Yankees won their seven-straight game on Thursday afternoon after defeating the San Diego Padres 2-1 at home.

Joba Chamberlain, making his fourth career start, struck out nine batters over 5 2/3 innings against the Padres. He threw 100 pitches, leaving a 1-1 ball game in the sixth.

Jose Veras, Kyle Farnsworth, and Mariano Rivera blanked San Diego over the least 3 1/3 innings, allowing the Yankees to win after Alex Rodriguez singled home Derek Jeter to give New York a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth.

At 40-33 the Yankees are seven games over .500, their highest mark of the season.

New York will host the Reds this weekend as interleague play continues.

Peavy 'Rusty', But Will Probably Start Thursday

Padres' starter Jake Peavy was 'rusty' in a simulated game on Saturday but will probably still start for the team against the Dodgers on Thursday, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.

"I just didn't throw many good pitches," Peavy said of the appearance.

Peavy has reportedly recovered from an elbow strain, and Manager Bud Black said his ace probably will come off the disabled list to start against the Dodgers on Thursday.
