San Diego To Release Todd Walker

The San Diego Padres plan to release infielder Todd Walker on Tuesday, a little more than a month after he won a $3.95 million salary in arbitration.

The Padres will owe Walker $971,311 in termination pay.

Walker already was gone from the Padres' spring training camp on Monday afternoon.

Padres' Wells Diagnosed With Diabetes

San Diego Padres pitcher David Wells has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

According to a report in the San Diego Union-Tribune, the veteran pitcher was informed of the problem about two weeks ago.

Type 2 diabetes -- also known as adult-onset diabetes. -- develops when the body can't produce enough insulin. In such cases, the sugar level in the blood can get too high and potentially cause problems with the eyes, heart, blood vessels, nerves and kidneys.

Rockies' Hurdle, Francis Suspended

The Rockies will kick off the new season without their manager and one of their best pitchers.

Rockies manager Clint Hurdle and lefthander Jeff Francis were suspended Friday for an incident which occurred during a Cactus League contest against the Padres three days earlier.
