The Chicago White Sox, looking to strengthen their infield depth and add a reliable backup for third baseman Joe Crede, acquired infielder Geoff Blum from the San Diego Padres on Sunday for minor-league pitcher Ryan Meaux.
Blum, 32, batted .241 with five home runs and 22 RBI in 78 games with the Padres this season.
Blum, a switch hitter, has played second base, third base, shortstop, first base and the outfield.
"Geoff is a very versatile player who is comfortable at a number of positions on the field," White Sox general manager Ken Williams said in a statement.
"With his ability to hit from either side of the plate, Geoff also gives Ozzie Guillen additional options in making out his lineup and managing the game."

Cardinals general manager Walt Jocketty confirmed Friday that he is seeking an impact player to shore up an outfield decimated by injuries to right fielder Larry Walker and left fielder Reggie Sanders.
"We're not looking for someone considered an extra outfielder," Jocketty said several hours before the Cardinals opened a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. "We're looking for someone like we found last season in Larry Walker."
Jocketty has discussed the availability of San Diego outfielder Brian Giles with Padres general manager Kevin Towers, according to a source. Giles, like Walker, is a lefthanded hitter whom the Cardinals have long coveted. An apparent snag to a deal has been the Padres' insistence on receiving major-league pitching in return. Jocketty and manager Tony La Russa insisted Friday they do not want to subtract from their current roster to address an outfield need.
"The injuries obviously make a difference in what our objective is going to be," Jocketty said. "But again, the injuries are all short-term. And we still have a pretty good lead. If we had a one- or two-game lead, it would be a different situation."

The Texas Rangers plan to trade pitcher Chan Ho Park to the San Diego Padres for slugger Phil Nevin, a deal that awaited approval from the commissioner's office.
"If the league OKs it, then it's a done deal," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said Friday before his team played the Cincinnati Reds. "Obviously, we've talked to Texas. There's nothing official yet. Nev's aware of it. Chan Ho's aware of it."
Rangers spokesman Gregg Elkin also said the trade was pending approval from the commissioner's office. Park was scratched just before his scheduled start in Toronto on Friday night and left the ballpark.
The deal came just two days before Sunday's 3 p.m. CDT deadline for making trades without passing players through waivers. Approval was needed because it involves the Rangers sending cash to San Diego to help offset the money remaining on the $65 million, five-year contract Park signed with Texas before the 2002 season.
Less than an hour after Bochy spoke, Nevin told reporters he expected to be a member of the Rangers by Saturday.
"I'm going to go in and say goodbye to my teammates and start packing and get my stuff ready to go to Toronto," Nevin said. "I'm excited. I honestly am. It's an opportunity to play, it's a great organization, there's some great people there that I do know from a long time ago. I'm just excited to get over there."

Ramon Hernandez, who was unavailable for comment, also is a potential free agent who had wanted the Padres to sign him to a contract extension.
Those chances appear to be dwindling. His agent Eric Goldschmidt said he tried to interest the club in revisiting negotiations last week but was told the Padres weren't interested.

In his first game since he vetoed a trade that would have sent him to Baltimore, Phil Nevin started behind the plate at catcher.
It was his first start at catcher since 1999.
Nevin went 0 for 4 with a walk, while batting third in Bruce Bochy's lineup.
