Scott Boras: Padres Owner Discussed Juan Soto Extension Last Year

Apr 5, 2024 7:59 AM

Juan Soto is now a member of the New York Yankees, but some attempts were made to keep the star with the San Diego Padres for the long haul.

The Padres traded Soto to the Yankees in December.

Scott Boras, however, says that former Padres owner Peter Seidler had started to explore a multi-year deal with Soto last summer.

"Peter called about wanting to pursue [Soto], and there were discussions about wanting to keep him. And unfortunately, it did not work out because of [Seidler's] health," Boras told Jon Heyman.

Seidler passed away in November at age 63.

Padres Tried To Trade For Luis Arraez, Jesus Luzardo

Apr 4, 2024 9:07 AM

The San Diego Padres made a flurry of moves this offseason, but they targeted several more.

The Padres made "a strong offer" to the Miami Marlins for Luis Arraez, according to a report, and might have been even more interested in Jesus Luzardo.

San Diego's interest in Luzardo likely ended when they dealt for Dylan Cease in mid-March.

Padres To Name Jackson Merrill Opening Day Center Fielder

Mar 18, 2024 8:08 AM

The San Diego Padres are prepared to name top prospect Jackson Merrill their Opening Day center fielder, according to a report.

Merrill, who turns 21 next month, was the club's first-round pick in 2021 and is a consensus top-20 prospect.

He's not yet played a game above Double-A in his professional career, having slashed a solid but unspectacular .277/.326/.444 in 114 games split between the High-A and Double-A levels last year.

White Sox GM: Dylan Cease Offers Improved After Strong Spring

Mar 15, 2024 7:52 AM

Chicago White Sox general manager Chris Getz says that a strong spring helped Dylan Cease's value in advance of his trade to the San Diego Padres this week.

"His last outing in Cincinnati was an impressive one," Getz said Thursday. "There was a lot of buzz at that game. Unsurprisingly, teams really stepped up. ... Up until yesterday, we didn't feel like we had a deal on the table that we felt like met the mark, and it finally came together and we moved on it."

Cease, 28, was traded for three prospects and reliever Steven Wilson.

"Last year wasn't Dylan's best year," Getz said. "There was a level of concern that perhaps he wasn't going to get back to who he's been in the past. Other teams' comfort levels were raised when they were able to see it in person."
