Burnett Lost Confidence During Time With Yankees

A.J. Burnett is grateful for his time in New York, but says he allowed too many people to tinker with him during his time with the Yankees.

"It was fun the first couple of years. Then it got like, I'm never going to get out of this funk," said Burnett.

After signing an $82.5 million, five-year contract, Burnett helped the Yankees to their 27th World Series title in 2009. He then went 21-26 record with a 5.20 ERA over the following two seasons.

"I let a few too many people tinker with me, maybe," Burnett said. "When you let that happen, you start doubting yourself sometimes. You wonder, 'Am I doing it right? Is this how it's supposed to feel?' and things like that. In '09, nobody messed with me. I was able to do what I wanted to do on the mound, whether it was turn around, close my eyes and pitch upside down. Then you have a few bad games and you start changing and listening."

Burnett Trade Becomes Official

A.J. Burnett is officially a member of the Pirates.

Pittsburgh and New York announced on Sunday night that they have completed a trade involving the right-hander.

In exchange for Burnett, the Yankees get 25-year-old right-hander Diego Moreno and 20-year-old outfielder Exicardo Cayones.

The Pirates will pay $13 million of the $31.1 million remaining on Burnett's contract, according to a sources.

The trade was agreed to on Friday, but Burnett had to compete a physical, which he did on Sunday.

"A.J. Burnett is a solid veteran starting pitcher with an above average pitch repertoire and potential to provide us with significant quality innings from our starting rotation," Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said in a statement released by the team.
