Pirates Clinch First Pick In 2011 MLB Draft

Despite beating St. Louis on Tuesday, a win from the Mariners against Texas clinched the first overall pick in the 2011 MLB Draft for the Pirates.

It will be the first time the Pirates have picked first overall since 2002, when they took pitcher Bryan Bullington. The consensus top talent in the coming class is Rice University third baseman Anthony Rendon.

The Pirates are 56-101 while the Mariners 61-96, so they still could finish with matching records, but the tiebreaker is the previous season's place in the standings, and the Pirates finished next-to-last in 2009, ahead of the Washington Nationals.

Milledge Believes He's Shed Negative Labels

Lastings Milledge is likely done this due to an oblique injury and his numbers weren't outstanding, but he feels as though he has matured.

"I broke a lot of labels," Milledge said. "I broke a lot of things that were said about me. That was a goal, as well to get that negative vibe from over my head this year. I think that's bigger than hitting 30 homers. I think that's bigger than anything else, because now teams see that I've gotten a lot better as a player and a lot better as a person."

Iwamura Clears Waivers, Gets Released

Pirates infielder Aki Iwamura cleared waivers on Friday and was released.

Iwamura hit just .182 for Pittsburgh before he was designated for assignment on June 16th.

He failed to improve and the Pirates couldn't work out a trade to their liking.
