Pirates Claim Hayden Penn

The Pirates have claimed Hayden Penn off waivers from the Marlins.

Penn had a 7.77 ERA in 22.0 innings with Florida during the 2009 season, but had a 4.11 ERA and 8.0 K/9 rate in Triple-A.

Pirates Select McCutchen As Fifth Starter

The Pirates have named Daniel McCutchen their fifth starter to begin the 2010 season.

"It feels good," McCutchen said. "I'm not surprised. Not to take anything away from anybody else, but I came in with 100 percent confidence that I was going after this spot. No matter what position I was in, I was approaching it like it was my spot. Maybe, or obviously, that wasn't the case, but that's still the mindset I had. Confidence is a big thing. I have that and I'm going to go out there every day with it, trying to get better."

McCutchen has not yet made a Grapefruit League start this spring, but management saw enough from him in two relief appearances and two Minor League starts.

Ramon Vazquez Expects To Be Released By Pirates

Ramon Vazquez expects to be released even though his $2 million salary for 2010 is guaranteed and the team would have to pay all of it if he is released.

"They told me I'm not on the team right now," the Pirates' veteran utility infielder said. "If I don't do well enough, I'm going to be gone. I don't know what that means, if that's a trade or what. I'm playing for myself right now. All I know is that I feel really good health-wise for the first time in a long time, and I'm ready for whatever happens."
