Pirates Inch Closer To Free Agent Turnbow

The Pirates are reportedly one of three finalists for free-agent reliever Derrick Turnbow.

A source described the Pirates as "very much still in the mix" but didn't reveal if an offer had been made.

Turnbow has been linked to the Giants, Marlins, Phillies, Tigers, Rangers, and Rays.

Pirates Buy Up Doumit's Arbitration Years

The Pittsburgh Pirates have reached an agreement on a three-year deal with catcher Ryan Doumit that will take him through his salary arbitration years, a baseball source told ESPN.com.

It is believed the deal could be worth a total value of $20 million over four years or $30 million over five years.

The Pirates are expected to announce the deal Monday after Doumit completes a physical exam.

Pirates Could Move Alvarez Up Ladder Quickly

If the Pirates are happy with what they see in Pedro Alvarez this coming spring, he could make his way to Pittsburgh much faster than originally planned.

"If Pedro's ready to go, we're going to be aggressive with him," director of player development Kyle Stark said. "It depends on what we see from him, how he adjusts to the game, what kind of shape he's in, a lot of factors. But I can tell you we're not going to rush him just to make up for lost time."

The team has been very impressed with his offensive and defensive abilities at third base.

"As advertised," Stark said. "He projects to be a middle-of-the-order bat, and that's exactly what he looked like."
