Pirates Release Morris

Matt Morris was released Sunday by the Pirates after failing to pitch past the second inning on Saturday night against the Phillies, as reported by the Associated Press.

The decision to cut the veteran Morris will cost the Pirates more than $10M, besides what they already have paid him this season. He is making $10,037,283, or about one-fifth of the Pirates? payroll, and has a $1M buyout for 2009.

Pirates May Buy Out Morris

The Pirates may finally admit a mistake on acquiring Matt Morris by releasing his $10,037,283 salary, as well as the $1 million buyout of his 2009 option, all of it guaranteed.

"As an organization, we can never rule out releasing a player who cannot help the team win, even if such a release would be expensive," said Frank Coonelly. "Our objective is to win as many games as possible, and we need to have the players on the roster who will put us in the best position to win."
