Wilson Dishes Criticism

Jack Wilson dished out some criticism about second baseman Jose Castillo. Wilson reiterated comments he made during a televised interview Friday night, when Wilson said he would prefer to have Freddy Sanchez at second if Castillo doesn't improve his work ethic.

"I love the guy, don't get me wrong," Wilson said yesterday afternoon. "But we need Jose Castillo to be the kind of player that he can be. He has a chance to be an elite player, and we need the right attitude from him.

"There were a lot of mistakes made last year that were not physical; they were all mostly mental -- the lapses defensively, being lazy and stuff like that."

Armas And Pittsburgh Close To Deal?

Tony Armas, Jr. is the only free agent with whom the Pirates are known to be communicating at this stage, and there was some industry speculation yesterday that a deal might be at hand. But neither the team nor Armas' agent, Diego Bentz, could confirm that.

Armas, 28, was 9-12 with a 5.03 ERA in 30 starts for the Washington Nationals last season and made $2.1 million.

The Pittsburgh Pirates will have a red jersey for the 2007 season.

"Red has been a part of our logo, off and on, for decades," said Tim Schuldt, the team's senior vice president for marketing, sales and broadcasting. "When we asked some of our season-ticket holders if they were comfortable with it, they embraced it."
