Hamels Knows Contract Will Work Itself Out

Cole Hamels will likely be a free agent after this season as he is not expected to come to terms with the Phillies on an extension before Opening Day.

"I haven't been thinking about it at all," Hamels said. "It's going to linger until something happens. Fortunately ... things will take care of itself."

Hamels continues to say he does not have a deadline for a deal.

"I guess I've got until the start of Spring Training next year [to sign]," Hamels said. "I guess that's kind of what it's down to. I've got 162 games to play, and then postseason and try to go to the World Series. That's always been my focus, being in the best possible shape to win a World Series again. That's just who I am. I just want to win and play my best with my teammates and winning a championship for the city of Philadelphia."

Phillies Insist They Aren't Hiding Information On Utley

A number of questions have surrounded the chronically injured knees of Chase Utley, even after he spoke with the media on Sunday.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. insists that the team isn't toying with the media as the second baseman's status for 2012 remains uncertain.

"We're not giving you the information to try to deceive or create more speculation," Amaro said. "We're trying to be as respectful to some of our players as we can possibly be. And at the same time, we're trying to give you as much information as we can. We don't have anything to gain from hiding information from you guys."

Phillies Could Look To Ramiro Pena To Spell Utley

The Phillies will be without Chase Utley for an undetermined period of time because of issues with both knees.

Utley announced on Sunday that he will begin the season on the disabled list, but he intends to play in 2012.

The Phillies have interest in Yankees utilityman Ramiro Pena to help fill the void.
