Phillies Still Hope To Retain Oswalt, Lidge

The Phillies have declined the 2012 options on the contracts of pitchers Roy Oswalt and Brad Lidge, but that doesn't mean they are done in Philadelphia.

The team paid a $2 million buyout to Oswalt and $1.5 million to Lidge.

Philadelphia general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. says he would like to bring back the players for 2012.

"While we will not pick up either of their options, we will remain in contact with representatives for both players about the possibility of bringing them back for the 2012 season," Amaro said in a statement.

"Brad and Roy both made significant contributions to the Phillies over the past several seasons."

Jamie Moyer Still Eyeing Comeback In 2012

Jamie Moyer still plans to attempt a comeback to the Major Leagues next season, despite the fact that he is coming off major elbow surgery and will be 49 years old.

"There will be naysayers, but they've been there my whole career," Moyer said. "I don't let them affect me in a negative way. If anything, I turn it into a positive."

The free-agent lefthander is nearly 11 months removed from Tommy John surgery. He has worked his way up to 60 pitches during bullpen sessions and is about to start contacting clubs that might want to watch him throw.

"If this were the middle of July, I'd be at the stage where one more good bullpen session and I'd be ready to go out on a [minor-league] rehab assignment," said Moyer, who turns 49 next month.

"I've gone through this rehab knowing that my arm and body will stop me if they have to. So far they haven't."

Howard May Miss Start Of Next Season

Ryan Howard could miss the start of next season after the Phillies' slugger had surgery Wednesday to repair his torn Achilles' tendon.

Howard ruptured his left Achilles' tendon while making the final out in Philadelphia's 1-0 loss to St. Louis last Friday night.

"It's going to be five-to-six months from the surgery until he can play at his accustomed level," GM Ruben Amaro, Jr., said.
