Utley: 'I'm Going To Listen To My Body'

Phillies' second baseman Chase Utley doesn't know when he'll be able to play again after having hip surgery but says that he'll listen to his body.

"It's not trying to find a way -- it's listening to my body," said Utley.

"Right now, we are listening, and it's responding well. If that continues to happen, then I don't see why I won't be ready for Opening Day. But if there are some setbacks -- which could be a possibility -- I'm not going to be dumb about it. I'm not going to move through that. I'm going to listen to my body, and when it's ready, it will be ready. Hopefully, that will be Opening Day."

Alou Draws Interest From Phillies

The Phillies have reportedly shown interest in free-agent outfielder Moises Alou, with one major-league source claiming that they are pursing him "pretty hard."

"It's a possibility," GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said of Alou. "He's in the mix. But ultimately his expectations might be a little too high as far as playing time goes. This is a limited playing role."

Phillies' Payroll To Hit Record Heights

Ryan Howard will soon sign a contract with the Phillies, and when that happens their payroll is expected to surpass $130 million, a club record.

Last season, Philadelphia had a payroll of $112 million. General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. admitted he isn't sure the Phillies would have been able to sustain such a large increase if not for their World Series victory.

"With the economics of the game, I don't know if that would have been the case," Amaro said. "It's very fortunate that we've been given the leeway to keep this team together. But the changing economics will keep having an effect, and we have to be cognizant of that."

The team's 2009 payroll is expected to be among the top five in baseball.
