Phillies Narrow Gap On Mets

The Phillies completed a four-game sweep of the Mets with a thrilling 11-10 win in the series finale on Thursday.

Chase Utley drove in the winning run with an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning to help the Phillies close the gap on the National League East leading Mets to two games.

The Phillies squandered leads of 5-0 and 8-5 and fell behind 10-8 after the Mets scored five runs in the eighth.

But Mets closer Billy Wagner allowed a solo homer to Pat Burrell in the bottom of the same inning and RBI singles to Tadahito Iguchi and Utley in the ninth to hand the Phillies the win.

Garcia May Need Shoulder Surgery

Freddy Garcia's comeback could be finished Thursday.

The righthander has not pitched for the Phillies since June 8 in Kansas City because of a strained right shoulder. He recently made three rehab starts - one for the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Phillies and two for single-A Clearwater - but he plans to meet Thursday with orthopedist James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., to talk about his shoulder.

If Andrews recommends an operation, Garcia could have surgery that day.

Phillies Activate Utley

The Phillies activated second baseman Chase Utley from the 15-day disabled list in time for Monday night's game against the Mets.

Utley has missed 28 games since breaking his right hand against Washington on July 26. The Phillies went 15-13 in Utley's absence.

Utley played three games over the weekend for Class AA Reading, going 1-for-10.
