Phillies Conclude They Need To Deal Rowand?

The Phillies seem to have concluded they'll have no choice but to at least dangle center fielder Aaron Rowand before the trading deadline if they're still looking for late-inning bullpen upgrades. But one NL scout who is a longtime Rowand admirer says that would be a big mistake.

"You're talking about a guy who has a Philadelphia-type mentality," the scout said. "And that's hard to find. Plus, this guy is a big force in that clubhouse, and you have to be really careful about trading a player like that. Sometimes, the intangibles that guy offers under the surface don't become apparent until after he's gone."

Braves' Cox Ejected, Now One Short Of McGraw's Record

Braves manager Bobby Cox is one ejection shy of matching the career record after he was tossed from Saturday's game against the Phillies.

Cox was ejected for the second straight game and the fifth time this season, leaving him one behind John McGraw's record of 131. After Kelly Johnson led off the third inning with a double, Willie Harris hit a grounder over first base that landed near the foul line. First base umpire Ron Kulpa immediately called the ball foul, and TV replays supported the ruling.

Cox was thrown out of the game soon after he came on the field to argue the call.

Phillies Activate Howard, Place Myers On 15-Day DL

The Phillies activated Ryan Howard and placed Brett Myers on the 15-day disabled list on Friday.

Howard went on the disabled list on May 12, retroactive to May 10, with a strained left quadriceps. Friday was the first day he could be activated. Howard was 2-for-6 with a homer and four RBIs in two rehabilitation games with Class A Lakewood.

He was in Friday night's starting lineup against the Braves as the Phillies' cleanup hitter.

"That made our lineup look better to me," said manager Charlie Manuel.
