Executive: Trade Market Is 'Woefully Thin'

A major league executive has labeled this summer's trade market as a weak one.

"There is just not very much movement at all," one executive said. "I count only six teams that are ready to sell."

The executive listed the Cubs, Astros, Rockies, Athletics, Mariners and Twins as sellers.

A's Sign First-Round Pick Addison Russell

The A's have announced the signing of first-round pick Addison Russell of Pace High in Florida.

Russell, a shortstop, signed with the A's instead of accepting a scholarship to Auburn. He hit .358 with eight home runs and 33 RBI for Pace this season.

Baseball America reported that Russell signed for $2.65M.

A's Release Manny Ramirez

The A's have released Manny Ramirez after the outfielder-designated hitter requested his outright release, according to a San Jose Mercury News report on Friday night.

Ramirez has been eligible to join the A's on May 30 after serving a 50-game suspension for violating major-league baseball's drug policy last season.

There was no word on whether Ramirez would try to resume his career elsewhere.

A's Aren't Ready To Release Manny Just Yet

Manny Ramirez is struggling to regain his form at Triple-A Sacramento, but the Athletics aren't ready to end their relationship with the slugger.

Oakland hoped that Ramirez would be ready to help the big league club when his 50-game suspension ended May 30.

However, Ramirez has hit just .243 over 11 games at the Triple-A level and hasn't even played a full game in the past week because of a left leg injury.

"Until he's on the field on a regular basis and we see where he's at from a baseball standpoint, we're really not in a position where we're ready to make a decision," Billy Beane said. "We said from Day 1 that nothing is set in stone."

Rookie Parker Carries No-Hitter Into Eighth

Athletics rookie Jarrod Parker carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning against the Rangers on Monday night.

Oakland defeated Texas 12-1 in California.

"We went in with a really good plan and the execution of it was exactly what we wanted to do," Parker said. "It's one of those days. I had good stuff and they were off a little bit."

Michael Young grounded a single through the middle on a slider to lead off the eighth, ending Parker's no-hit bid.

"I made a bad pitch and he hit it up the middle and did what he was supposed to do," Parker said.

He got a warm ovation from the crowd of 10,120 and then recovered to get out of the inning on two more pitches -- a popup by Nelson Cruz and an inning-ending double play from David Murphy.
