Miguel Tejada Wants A's To Sign Him

Miguel Tejada, who won an MVP with the Athletics much earlier in his career, is trying to get a job with the team.

"Tell (general manager) Billy (Beane) to give me a call," Tejada told the San Francisco Chronicle. "I don't want big money. I just want to play."

Tejada, who will turn 38 on May 25, said he would accept a minor league deal.

Oakland is in a bind in the infield after third baseman Scott Sizemore suffered a season-ending ACL tear last weekend.

McCarthy Will Start For A's On Opening Day

The Athletics have named Brandon McCarthy their starter for Opening Day 2012.

McCarthy was an easy choice based on last year's results and trades that left the team without All-Stars Gio Gonzalez and Trevor Cahill.

Oakland will open their season in Japan on March 28.

"He was a natural pick after last year and with the pitchers we ended up trading away," Bob Melvin said of McCarthy.

"He's been focused this spring knowing he has to get ready a little earlier. He looks like he's in midseason form."

Oakland Loses Sizemore For 2012

The Athletics have lost Scott Sizemore for the 2012 season because of a torn ACL in his left knee.

The third baseman suffered the injury Saturday afternoon within two hours of the club's first full-squad workout.

Oakland will turn to a catching prospect for help, with Josh Donaldson expected to get a long look at third base before the club decides whether to look outside the organization to fill the void.

Manny Reports To A's, Ready For 'New Beginning'

Manny Ramirez has reported to the Athletics as he prepares for a new stage in his career.

He signed a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training last week.

"Everything starts with the number one. To me, it's like a new beginning," the 39-year-old said. "God has given me a second chance and I'm not going to waste it. My arrival in Oakland is not a coincidence, it's a God-incidence."

Ramirez, who twice has tested positive for drugs banned by Major League Baseball, will have to sit out for 50 games before having his first at-bat this season.

A's McCarthy, Wife On Magazine Cover

A's pitcher Brandon McCarthy and his wife, Amanda, are on the cover of the current issue of ESPN The Magazine, which hit newsstands Wednesday.

The magazine wanted to talk to McCarthy about how he used analytics to help change his pitching motion, a rather intellectual approach considered uncommon in baseball.

Last week, McCarthy was surprised when the publication contacted him for a cover shoot.

"I'm still weirded out by it," McCarthy said of the whole experience. "It was originally just a regular article. Somehow it just got bigger and bigger." McCarthy is shown in full uniform on the cover, and Amanda, a former model, is saddled up to him in a revealing outfit. The headline reads: "Chicks dig the ground ball."
