A's Cust Sets AL Mark With 187th Strikeout

Athletics designated hitter Jack Cust struck out twice on Friday night to break the American League record for strikeouts in a season, according to Associated Press.

Cust struck out on a checked swing against Seattle right-hander Felix Hernandez to lead off the second inning, tying Rob Deer's AL record of 186 K's, and fanned again with one out and a runner on second in the fourth to set the record.

He also went into Friday night's game with a league-leading 101 walks.

Oakland's Triple-A Affiliate Wins Second Consecutive Championship

Oakland's Sacramento affiliate won the Triple-A championship for the second year in a row, beating the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees 4-1 in Oklahoma City on Tuesday.

"We've all got rings coming," said Oakland closer Brad Ziegler, who spent the first two months of the year in Sacramento.

Arizona To Go After Ellis For 2B This Winter

Mark Ellis is a free agent this winter and has postponed contract discussions with the A's until after the season. Arizona is expected to be among the teams with interest in Ellis if Orlando Hudson signs elsewhere this winter.
