A's Finally Pop The Champagne

Oakland's Nick Swisher and Milton Bradley each homered in a four-run second to back Rich Harden's five shutout innings, helping the A's clinch the AL West title Tuesday night with a 12-3 victory over Seattle.

The win, combined with the Angels' 5-2 loss against the Rangers, gave Oakland its first division title since 2003 and the 14th in franchise history. The small-budget A's are back in the playoffs after a two-year absence thanks to a sensational second half, a hallmark for this club in recent years.

Tigers Clinch First Playoff Appearance Since 1987; A's Have To Wait

The Tigers took a first step Sunday. The Athletics failed to take that step for a second straight day.

The Tigers clinched their first postseason berth in 19 years with their 11-4 victory over the Royals, while the Athletics failed to clinch the American League West title after suffering a 7-1 setback to the Angels.

Detroit held a subdued celebration at the mound after Andrew Miller struck out fellow rookie Angel Sanchez to ensure the Tigers' first playoff appearance since the 1987 team won the AL East crown with a 98-64 record.

Zito Compares Free Agent Situation To Fantasy Football

Barry Zito is discounting a recent report that neither the Mets nor Yankees was interested in signing him.

"It's like in fantasy football," Zito said. "I picked up Brett Favre and another owner is dying to get him but he's not coming up to me and saying, 'I want Brett Favre.' He's saying, 'I don't want Brett Favre, whatever.' So I'm making some offers elsewhere."
