Ramirez Not In Lineup On Sunday; Lester To Miss Start In Oakland

Manny Ramirez was out of Boston's starting lineup for the third time in four games Sunday as the Red Sox closed out a series against the Mariners.

Ramirez played in Saturday night's 4-3 loss to the Mariners and was 0-for-3. The outfielder told manager Terry Francona his right knee was sore Sunday morning. "I don't think it's a setback," Francona said before Sunday's game. "I think it was bothering him during the game. "We were hoping a couple of days off would be enough."

Big Hurt Wants To Stay In Oakland

The A's have begun preliminary negotiations on a new contract for Frank Thomas, the veteran said Saturday.

Thomas has been one of the best free-agent signings this season, with the A's giving him a $500,000 base salary. However, he has earned an additional $2 million out of a maximum $2.6 million in bonuses and incentives.

"We've talked to the A's," said Thomas, adding that agent Arn Tellem has been negotiating with the team for about a week.

"Hopefully we'll get something going soon. We're not close yet. I would love to come back here. Like I said, I'm just going to be patient. I would like to get a couple of years, but I don't know what their interests are in that."

Zito Gets 100th Career Win

Of course Barry Zito was thinking about a no-hitter. And that was too bad for him.

"That's the worst thing you can do because you then start to try to protect it," he said.

The Oakland lefty took his no-hit bid into the eighth inning before Mark DeRosa led off with a single, and earned his 100th career victory as the Athletics beat the Rangers 9-3 Friday night.
