Bynum Might Open Season With A's

Rookie infielder Ryan Theriot will make the team unless general manager Jim Hendry makes a deal in the next few days. The Cubs have inquired about Oakland Athletics outfielder Freddie Bynum, but Bynum has played so well this spring that he might open the season with the A's.

Cubs Interested In Oakland's Bynum

The Cubs are interested in Oakland A's utilityman Freddy Bynum, a Chone Figgins-type who can play second or third base as well as any outfield spot.

Bynum, 25, who carried a .386 average and five stolen bases into the weekend, is out of options and unlikely to make the A's final roster cut.

A's Trade Cruz To Arizona For Halsey

The Oakland Athletics acquired left-hander Brad Halsey from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for right-hander Juan Cruz on Sunday.

Halsey, whom the Diamondbacks acquired as part of the trade that sent Randy Johnson to the New York Yankees, was 8-12 with a 4.61 ERA last year for Arizona. He made 28 appearances, including 26 starts.

Cruz, who spent last season shuttling back and forth between Oakland and Sacramento of the PCL, pitched in 28 games with the A's last year, all in relief.

"I feel positive," Cruz said. "We have a good team here but I feel good about the opportunity. It's a good chance."
