Colon Feels 'Really Strong Physically And Mentally'

Bartolo Colon tossed a four-hit shutout for the Yankees against the Athletics on Monday afternoon.

It was the right-hander's first shutout in nearly five years.

"I feel really strong physically and mentally right now," Colon said through an interpreter. "I feel really good right now. It doesn't matter that I'm 38 years old. I feel really good right now."

Colon allowed no walks and struck out six to snap a five-start winless stretch with his first shutout since blanking Seattle 4-0 on July 5, 2006, with the Angels.

Yankees Continue To Give Sabathia Support

The Yankees avoided a sweep at the hands of the Mariners thanks to a 7-1 win on Sunday afternoon.

CC Sabathia won his sixth game of the season as New York once again provided him with tremendous run support.

"I don't think anybody has realized it yet, but I know," Sabathia said.

The left-hander allowed just one run in eight innings of work. He also won for the sixth straight time against the Mariners and improved to 8-1 in 11 starts at Safeco Field.

Sabathia entered Sunday getting the second-most offensive help in the majors at nearly 7 1/2 runs per game.

Girardi Wants Punishment For Fans That Run On Field

Yankees manager Joe Girardi hopes the four fans that ran on the field and disrupted Saturday night's game in Seattle get a punishment that will deter the same thing from happening in the future.

Girardi said Sunday that he didn't like the disruption of the action that took place.

All four fans, including one streaker who jumped onto the field by running off the top of the Mariners' dugout, were eventually tackled and removed by security.

"The penalties have to be severe. It just shouldn't happen," Girardi said.

Cashman: Cut Out Collision Plays In Exhibitions

In the wake of Giants catcher Buster Posey's serious leg injury, there has been a lot of debate about the future of collision plays at the plate.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman says that he would be in favor of making a rules change that would end contact between catchers and runners in collision plays in exhibition games.

"I would make those changes in the spring," Cashman said, "in exhibition games that don't count."

A few years ago, New York lost catcher Francisco Cervelli for three months to a broken wrist on a home-plate collision in spring training.

Cashman said he was not ready to take the step of altering rules as an effort to eliminate catcher-runner contact during the regular season.

"Second basemen and shortstops are vulnerable on double plays, outfielders will sometimes crash into a wall," he said. "Catchers are vulnerable [in collisions], for better or for worse."
