Bernie Williams: Jeter Can Play Any Position

Derek Jeter is skilled enough to play any position, according to former teammate Bernie Williams.

Williams played in the outfield for the Yankees for 16 seasons and won several World Series titles with Jeter as a teammate at shortstop.

"He's a very good athlete," Williams said.

"I'm not in any way saying that he's going to play center field, but I think he probably can play any position that he can get his mind into -- probably not catcher. Probably anything else, he'd be able to do."

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman created a stir last week when he said that Jeter was more likely to move to center field than third base if a position switch is required during his contract.

"I think that the kind of player that he is, he's probably going to do what's best for the team, because that's the way he has been," Williams said. "As an outsider looking in, he's always had this personality of being very team-oriented."

Posada Adjusting To Role As DH

Jorge Posada is adjusting to his new primary role as New York's designated hitter.

He looks forward to the role, but expects to catch at some point during the 2011 season.

"You know what, it is what it is," Posada said of his new role. "I look forward to everything I do. I try to help out the team and if that's going to help out the team and if that's what they want then I'm OK with it.

"It's going to be tough during the season to see tough games ... behind the plate," he added. "Obviously that's going to happen. But other than that, if we are doing well and the team is doing well it's going to be a little easier."

Posada, the long-time catcher of the Yankees, was at first resistant to the change.

"I'll catch, I'll catch. I'll catch this year. You know, I'll DH and then they're going to want me to catch one of those days," Posada said. "... I'm keeping open minded; I would love to catch. I'm training like I always do. And if I have to catch, I'll catch."

Jeter Finishes Batting Drills

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter and team hitting coach Kevin Long have completed three days of pre-spring training drills.

Jeter, 36, has a career batting average of .314, but hit just .270 last season.

He worked on a number of batting fundamentals, including his stride, in a batting cage during the final session on Friday at New York's minor league complex.

Yanks President: Rangers Owner 'Delusional'

Yankees president Randy Levine says Rangers owner Chuck Greenberg is "delusional."

Levine made his comments in response to Greenberg's opinion that Texas kept the chase for Cliff Lee going long enough for Philadelphia to sneak in and take Lee from New York.

"I think Chuck is delusional," Levine said.

"He has been running the Rangers for a few minutes and seems to believe he's mastered what everyone else is thinking. I think he should let Cliff Lee speak for himself. I'll be impressed when he demonstrates he can keep the Rangers off welfare. What I mean is make them not be a revenue-sharing recipient for three years in a row, without taking financing from baseball or advance money from television networks. Then I'll be impressed."

Hal Steinbrenner Dismisses Seriousness Of Perceived Cashman Rift

Hal Steinbrenner on Thursday attempted to end speculation about a rift between him and general manager Brian Cashman.

The Yankees' managing general partner praised Cashman's job performance, telling the New York Post that the GM's opinions were valued by the rest of the management team and that Cashman had done nothing to lessen his stature within the organization. Steinbrenner said that he would be interested in retaining Cashman's services beyond the general manager's current contract, which is set to expire at season's end.

"[Cashman] and I have a great working relationship," Steinbrenner said. "There is no problem, right now. I think we have had a bunch of drummed-up drama."
