Yankees Executive Worried Obama Took One-Liner Incorrectly

Yankees assistant general manager Jean Afterman is afraid President Barack Obama may have taken a joke the wrong way.

The Yankees paid a visit to Obama at the White House on Monday as he honored them for winning the 2009 World Series.

"One of his enormous talents is to make everybody feel comfortable and make you feel like you can engage in what I like to think of as witty repartee with the leader of the free world," Afterman said. "Everybody has their favorite team. It was just like two people sitting around watching a ballgame and cheering their teams on."

As Obama prepared to hold the trophy, Afterman said, "Let him hold it; he may not get a chance again." The crowd assembled in the East Room laughed, prompting the President to reply, "And you wonder why the other teams don't root for you."

Afterman was quick to point out after that she's one of the few democrats in New York's front office.

"Really, my biggest concern was that it would be misinterpreted as a political statement, because I'm a supporter of his," Afterman said. "I'll be out there stumping for him, and voting for him and campaigning for him on his next campaign."

Girardi Comes To Vazquez's Defense

Yankees manager Joe Girardi has come to the defense of starting pitcher Javier Vazquez.

Curt Schilling said earlier this week that he didn't think Vazquez was cut out for the American League or New York.

"The leagues are obviously different, with the DH, but Javy has had winning seasons in the AL in the past," said Girardi. "We still feel he?s going to pitch at a high level for us."

Vazquez is 1-3 with a 9.00 ERA and will start on Saturday against the White Sox.
