Gossage: Rivera Is Best Closer Ever

Goose Gossage doesn't think there is even a question that Mariano Rivera is the greatest closer baseball has ever seen.

"I'm very proud of Mariano; he's a great relief pitcher and the greatest modern closer of all-time," Gossage said. "But to compare him to guys like me, Rollie Fingers, Dan Quisenberry and Sparky Lyle, it's apples and oranges. These guys are so dominant in that one-inning role, people forget about what we used to do."

Wang Gets First Win, ERA Drops To 10.06

Lost in all the attention that closer Mariano Rivera received for recording his 500th save and driving in his first run on Sunday night, was Chien-Ming Wang's first win of 2009.

The Yankees held off the Mets 3-2, thanks to Wang's longest and best outing of the season.

He pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on just four hits. He walked three batters and struck out the same number.

With the performance, his ERA is at a season-low 10.06.

He induced 13 ground balls, a great sign for a sinker ball pitcher like Wang, while allowing just three fly balls. It was his best ground ball-to-fly ball ratio of the season.

In his last three starts, Wang's ERA is 4.70. He has pitched at least five innings in all three of those starts.

His next appearance is expected to be Saturday, July 4th against the Blue Jays.
