Matsui's Knee Needs To Be Drained

Joe Torre insisted Hideki Matsui being sent to New York last night to have his balky right knee drained today isn't that big of a deal. However, the procedure likely will limit Matsui to DH duty against the Indians when the ALDS opens in Cleveland on Thursday night.

"It's nothing serious," Torre said of Matsui having fluid removed from the hinge that has been a problem for most of the season. "It won't affect his status."

Hal Steinbrenner Elected Chair Of Yankee Global Enterprises

There was no announcement that Hal Steinbrenner would one day take over for his father as the principal owner of the Yankees, but the news yesterday that he had been elected as the chairman of the board for Yankee Global Enterprises LLC certainly puts him in line to do just that.

Hal Steinbrenner succeeded his former brother-in-law, Steve Swindal, in the position at Yankee Global Enterprises, the holding company for the team and its stake in the YES Network. According to The Associated Press, Swindal, who once was designated as George Steinbrenner's successor, was officially bought out by the Yankees, completely severing ties with the organization.

Hal Steinbrenner, 38, is already a general partner of the Yankees and has served as a board member of Yankee Global Enterprises, as well as its executive VP and treasurer. He also is a member of the YES board of directors and serves as chairman and CEO of Steinbrenner Hotel Properties."Hal is very much involved. He's certainly taken a great deal of interest, and he's a very serious-minded person," Joe Torre said. "The few times I've been in his company over the last four or five months, you could see the difference, that this was something he was really applying himself to."

Yankees Clinch Playoff Berth

The New York Yankees (90-67) have clinched a playoff berth for the thirteenth-straight season with a 12-4 win over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

This from a team that was several games under .500 in May (21-29), and was once 14.5 behind the Red Sox in the AL East. The Bombers celebrated on the field in Tampa, with the division title still a possibility.
