Yanks Won't Call Bernie

If Bernie Williams had accepted the Yankees' non-roster invitation to spring training, Bobby Abreu's injury would have given him plenty of additional playing time to prove his worth. But Williams declined the offer, and the Yankees are only looking forward.

When Torre was asked if Abreu's injury could lead him to think more about having Williams around, he politely danced around the question. "This is something we're not looking at as long-term," he said. "When you're dealing with two weeks in spring training, you certainly don't want to throw up any flags."

Gag Baseball Card Of Jeter Shows Bush, Mantle

As President Bush smiled and waved from the stands and Mickey Mantle looked on from the dugout, Derek Jeter swung his bat. Talk about pressure.

The game never happened, of course. It was just someone's idea of a visual gag -- pulled off in a recent Topps baseball card through digital manipulation. "We saw it in the final proof and we could have axed it," Topps spokesman Clay Luraschi told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "But we decided to let it run, we wanted to print it. We thought it was hilarious."

The card will be changed when Topps issues a complete set at midseason, Luraschi said.

Abreu Out Two-Weeks With Oblique Injury

Yankees right fielder Bobby Abreu is expected to miss at least two weeks after straining his right oblique during batting practice Monday, an injury manager Joe Torre said won't cause the team to make a new push for Bernie Williams to report.

Torre said Abreu will be ready for opening day.

"He didn't feel anything until he was hitting," Torre said. "It's just one of those things. I guess the good news is it's early. You can afford a couple weeks right now."
